Combine the Best Free Spyware Removers.

A robust "Anti-Spyware Strategy" can be achieved with free spyware removers.

The key is to use several in parallel to remove current infections, and prevent future attacks.
A 2-step process of (1) Scan/remove and (2) Protect.

(1) If you suspect your PC has spyware on it, try the following:

Download, install and run AdAware as a first step. This is a quick and simple way to test if ANY of the common spyware exist on your system. Remove whatever spyware it finds after the scan.

Next, as an option, run Spybot free spyware remover, removing any residual threats found.

Depending on your results, you may skip Spybot, but it is wise (and recommended) that you run an additional scanner such as CounterSpy.
The free trial (15 days) will remove the most current of threats, and tops all other programs we feature, especially the fully free spyware removers in our "Anti-Spyware Test."

Alternatively, try Spy Sweeper.
The free trial restricts you to viewing results only, so you can't remove threats without first paying for the software. It is also very slow at scanning. That said, it performs a more comprehensive scan than the free spyware removers we recommend, and will detect new variants of spyware other programs may overlook. So if the scan does detect additional spyware, it may be worth paying the subscription and keeping this as your main spyware removal and protection tool.

Note: Make sure you update each program before use. Update the software (program) and the threat database ('Definitions') of each program. Do whilst online, and follow the prompts specfic to each program, or instructions given on this site to update.

After update run the program in 'Normal' or preferably Safe Mode.
Additionally, as spyware remnants may be left untouched by removal tools, you can manually delete spyware files remaining and at the same time clean your hard drive.

This is best reserved for people who are adept in navigating the registry, and are aware of the importance of registry entries and system files.
At the very least it is a great idea to download and run HijackThis and post the results to determine if anything remains after scanning and removal by spyware removers.

(2) To protect your PC from future attacks try the following:

Install anti-spyware prevention programs that monitor your system, such as Spyware Doctor.
With its free, real-time protection module active ('OnGuard'), your system will be kept safe from a range of threats.

Alternatively, or in conjunction to, run Spybot with the Resident TeaTimer and SDHelper activated.

And 'Immunize' Internet Explorer against installation of unwanted spyware from the internet with both free spyware removers; Spybot and Spyware Doctor.
We recommend installing and using both, as they protect in different ways, and increase the coverage immunization gives.

Final Comments: The preceding recommendations provide the best free spyware removal (at least in the first instance) and ongoing protection. It is our experience that together, they have are effective against most current spyware.

However, the internet is rapidly changing. Effectiveness of products will vary and this is particularly relevant to free spyware removers, as less is spent on R&D.
You always get what you pay for. So purchasing paid versions can be a wise investment in the long term.

Anti-spyware programs are only one area of security. Overall system defense requires a comprehensive 'Online Security Strategy' to remain safe in the ever-changing internet environment.
