Simple Steps to Manually Delete Spyware.
A high degree of infection may require you to manually delete spyware as some remnants may be left untouched by removal tools. The procedures outlined below will clear areas of your hard drive that may harbour malicious files or registry entries. In doing so you also remove unused files that hamper overall system performance. Note: Procedures to manually delete spyware should not be attempted by the novice. They are best reserved for people who are adept in navigating the registry, and are aware of the importance of registry entries and system files. The procedures below relate to file locations found in Windows 2000 and XP only. Firstly, get the free download of HijackThis and save to a location you will remember easily e.g. your desktop. Reboot your system and start in Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode (log in as administrator or any local profile with Admin rights) open [My Computer],[Control Panel],[Add or Remove Programs]. Scroll down the list of programs and delete any you don't need. Those you don't recognise, do a web search on the name. Some programs have an uninstaller to delete themselves and can be removed from here. Next go to [My Computer],[Tools],[Folder Options],[View]. Under folder 'Hidden Files and Folders' click 'Show Hidden Files and Folders'. Uncheck 'Hide Protected Operating System Files ...'. Click [OK]. This will allow you to see all hidden folders and files. Back in 'My Computer' click on [Local Disk](usually C:).Open folder 'Documents and Settings' and do the following for each profile found within:(Note: some profiles such as 'All Users' won't have the below files-you can ignore these profiles.) Open 'Cookies' folder and delete all files. Open [Local Settings],[Temp] and delete all files, open 'Temporary Internet Files' and delete all folders and files. Go back to the root of C: and Open 'Program Files'. Clean out any folders that relate to programs you removed earlier. Go back to the root of C: and Open folder [Windows](for XP) or [WINNT](for Windows 2000), [Temp] and delete all files within. For XP only, you may want to delete all files under [Windows], [Prefetch] folder as well. Go back to the root of C: and Open [Recycler/Recycled] and delete all files or right click on the icon and click 'Empty Recycle Bin.' Next follow the procedure to post a HijackThis log. As a final step, it's a good idea to hide files again to reduce the possibility of deleting important system files. Follow instructions as above to 'unhide' but choose options to hide files. Additionally, to delete spyware of a specific nature, where the threat is a know type, you can use the following index and look up individual removal instructions.
